Modernizing sales planning at Mercedes-Benz HQ

Modernizing sales planning at Mercedes-Benz HQ

🗒️Background

My role: Lead UX Designer

Users: Sales planning managers at Mercedes-Benz HQ at Stuttgart.

What do they do?
They have to make decisions on (i)the quantity of vehicles produced at each plant, (ii)which markets these vehicles are allocated to.

Why was this project started?
The sales planning process at Mercedes is managed through legacy apps developed in the early 2000s. These are expensive to maintain and unable to adapt with evolving market needs.

Consequently, Mercedes is going through the largest digital transformation in it's history. Moving the management of its end-to-end sales operations to a suite of custom-made responsive web applications.
My role

I lead the design of the Sales Planning & Allocation application from 2022.

Design and development of the app had already started by the time I joined the project. One of my main responsibilities was to establish a user research and feedback process during development.

Tasks
  • User interviews
  • Usability testing
  • Wireframing
  • Hi-fidelity prototyping
  • UI/UX audits

The Challenge

Establishing a user research & feedback process

The project was already in development by the time I joined in 2022.

One of the primary challenges I observed was the lack of user insights in the development process. The product team had, so far, focused on replicating the feature set of the legacy apps without directly talking to user.

There was an opportunity here to gain user insights and therby improve the user experience.
